In Mid-March 2010, with more than two feet of snow still on the ground, we -Sarah, Andy, Jessica (one of Andy’s friends from residency in Milwaukee at the Medical School of Wisconsin) and Jeff - headed south from Albany, NY, to visit Kaaterskill Falls on the northern edge of the Catskills, just off NY Route 23A. The falls are just a half mile off the trail head, which starts at Bastion Falls and then heads up to their base.
As spring was just around the corner, the snow was soft in many places, and even when we stepped on what we thought was hard-pack snow, sometimes we found ourselves with one leg sunk up to the knee. But the hike was worth it, and probably easier to accomplish with the snow on the ground then if it had melted and we were traipsing through mud!
